With the signing of the German-Korean trade, shipping and friendship treaty on 26 November 1883, bilateral relations were established on an official basis. After the Korean war (1950-1953), which led to the division of the country, the relationship between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Korea developed closely and trustingly.

With its high-performance economy and high technological expertise, Korea is one of Germany's most important economic partners in Asia. Korea is the eleventh largest economy, the sixth largest export nation in the world and is the second most important sales market in Asia for Germany after China. Germany remains the most important European trading partner for Korea.

According to Korean statistics, the Korean-German trading volume was around 27.1 billion US dollars in 2015. Germany recorded a trade surplus of USD 13.8 billion. Approximately 500 German companies or companies with capital participation from Germany are represented in Korea according to Korean data. Korean direct investment in Germany resulted in USD 4.3 billion by the end of 2015.

German exports to Korea are growing significantly

The free trade agreement provides for complete customs reduction for industrial goods until mid of 2018. The supply of German products to Korea benefited greatly from the free trade agreement between the EU and Korea. Since the reduction of customs in middle 2011, exports "Made in Germany" have been growing and developed more dynamically than exports to China and Japan in the same time period.

At the same time, German products gained market shares in Korea.

Cars "Made in Germany" are very popular among Korean consumers.

The most important German export product to Korea was cars with a value of 6.8 billion US $ (2015), followed by further products such as industrial machinery and equipment, measuring, testing and control instruments, organic chemicals, etc.

The main Korean export products to Germany were also cars, electrical machinery, apparatus, general industrial machines, equipment for telecommunications. Since the free trade agreement was signed, the Korean exports to Germany of medical devices and pharmaceutical products have developed dynamically between 2010 and 2015.

Relations in the field of research and technology are developing very strongly. Korea is a world leader in information and communication technology. The German research institutes for example the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, universities and the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft are cooperating closely with Korean partners.

Around 5,700 Korean students study at German universities. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and other organizations offer a variety of scholarship programs. Approximately 420 university partnerships and over 65 German lecturers at Korean universities enrich the scientific contacts. Many Korean graduates of German universities keep their contacts to Germany. There is an active German-Korean alumni Network (ADeKo).

An important link between the two countries are the more than 28,000 Koreans living in Germany and many Germans of Korean origin. This group includes students, Korean company employees, Korean former miners and nurses as well as their children.
